Gays Mills

Named for a sawmill owner who established his business on the banks of the Kickapoo River, Gays Mills is now best known for its Orchard Ridge. Apple-growing first began in 1905, and now seven orchards are perched along Highway 171 above the village, the largest concentration of orchards in the tri-state area. Applefest, held the last full weekend in September, draws visitors from far and wide to enjoy the apple harvest, jellies, and baked goods plus carnival rides, craft vendors, and a parade.

Gays Mills is also known for its Spring Festival, a celebration of folk music and other traditions of the valley. It is held on Mother’s Day each year. In late summer, the Crawford County Fair is held on the fairgrounds near the village, complete with midway, rodeo, animal exhibits, and the ever-popular demolition derby.
